8 Day Gobi Desert

(1 Review)

Tour Overview:

The Gobi Desert tour continues for 8 days. Get in touch with your inner nomad as you hike, trek, camel ride, and “sand sled” through the Gobi Desert. On this journey, you will see desert steppe, tremendous sand dunes, deep gorges with rivers running through them, Mongolia’s own “Grand Canyon,” and the infamous “Flaming Cliffs” of Bayanzag.

The word Gobi means “desert” in Mongolian. The Gobi is made up of several distinct ecological and geographic regions, based on variations in climate and topography. The Gobi is most notable in paleontology and history as part of the great Mongol Empire, and as the location of several important cities along the Silk Road.

Highlights:

  • Baga Gazriin Chuluu – Spectacular granite rock formations rising dramatically from the steppe
  • Tsagaan Suvraga – Striking limestone escarpments often referred to as the “White Stupa”
  • Yoliin Am Valley – A scenic mountain gorge famous for its ice canyon and wildlife
  • Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes – Camel riding and a climb to the highest dunes for panoramic desert views
  • Bayanzag - Flaming CliffsaBayanzag (Flaming Cliffs) – World famous red sandstone cliffs and important fossil discovery site

Accommodation:

This tour includes family run ger camps and camping on some nights.

Once you are in the countryside exploring Mongolia it is our preference to stay with local nomadic families if they have an extra Ger. Gers will be shared by 4-5 people (only travellers) when we stay with a local family. As a Mongolian company we prefer to support these families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture and way of life on the steppe. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand. Also, given the remoteness, western style comforts may not be available.

Western style and luxury options are available in some parts of Mongolia in the form of Tourist ger camps. Ger camps have comfortable beds, hot showers and western style amenities. These are not included in the price quoted in this itinerary. However, if you think that you would prefer to have access to these western style comforts then please let us know and we can adjust the quote for your itinerary.

Transport:

  • Russian Van: Steel Russian vans with seats facing each other, ideal for adventure seeking travelers (max 6 people) No seat belts & air conditioner in the van.
  • Japanese/Korean Van: Family type van with comfortable seats and air conditioning (max 3-4 people)
  • Land Cruiser: Comfortable speedy ride with air conditioning (max 2 people) (Luxury Option)

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazriin Chuluu (230km)

The tour begins at 7:00am with a drive south from Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, located in the Middle Gobi Province.

Baga Gazriin Chuluu is a dramatic landscape of granite rock formations rising from the surrounding desert steppe. Rich in history and legend, it is believed that Chinggis Khaan once grazed his horses in this area. The rocky hills provide excellent opportunities for short hikes and light scrambling, allowing you to explore hidden valleys, unique rock formations, and scenic viewpoints.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive at a nomadic family ger camp, where you will spend the night. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional Mongolian hospitality and gain insight into the nomadic way of life.

Accommodation: Nomadic family ger camp (shower available)

Day 2 - Tsagaan Suvarga (240km)

Today’s journey follows a paved road as you travel deeper into the Gobi region. After packing up the camp, you will drive to Tsagaan Suvraga, one of Mongolia’s most striking natural landmarks.

Tsagaan Suvraga is a dramatic limestone formation approximately 30 metres high and 100 metres long, sculpted by wind and water erosion over thousands of years. Its unusual shapes and layered colours often resemble the ruins of an ancient city when viewed from a distance. There will be time to explore the area on foot and enjoy the impressive views across the surrounding desert plains.

Lunch will be in Mandalgovi town, the capital of the Middle Gobi Province. In the afternoon, you will continue to your nomadic family ger camp, where you will stay overnight. A shower is available.

Day 3 - Yoliin Am Valley (180km)

Today we enter the South Gobi Desert in Umnugovi Province. After breakfast, we begin the drive to Dalanzadgad, the provincial capital, where your guide will restock supplies with fresh food.

Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant in Dalanzadgad before continuing to Yoliin Am Valley (meaning “Vulture’s Mouth”), located within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in southern Mongolia.

Yoliin Am is a deep and narrow gorge, renowned for its impressive permanent ice field. By the end of winter, the ice can reach several metres in thickness and stretch for several kilometres. In some years, parts of the ice remain frozen throughout the summer, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding desert landscape.

After exploring the valley, you will travel to your nomadic family ger camp for the night.

Day 4 - Khongoryn Els (220km)

Driving on this day can be adventurous, as much of the route follows unpaved desert roads. After breakfast, we begin the journey to Khongoryn Els, the largest and most impressive sand dune system in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park.

Khongoryn Els is a spectacular expanse of towering sand dunes, bordered by lush green vegetation sustained by the Khongoryn Gol River, which is fed by underground springs from the surrounding mountains. The striking contrast between golden sand dunes and vibrant greenery makes this area one of the most memorable landscapes in the Gobi Desert.

You will stay overnight in a family‑run ger camp, a shower is available, and the family also operates a small restaurant, where cold drinks can be purchased.

Day 5 - Khongoryn Els

Take the opportunity to relax and fully appreciate the surrounding landscape. You will enjoy approximately one hour of camel riding to the sand dunes, followed by time for hiking, sand sliding, or climbing to the top of the dunes. Reaching the summit of the sand dunes before sunset is a truly memorable experience, as the changing colours of the desert create a spectacular and peaceful sunset over the Gobi.

Day 6 - Bayanzag (150km)

Your destination today is the aptly named Flaming Cliffs, also known as Bayanzag. The adventure across the vast desert landscape continues as you travel over what was once a prehistoric seabed, adding a fascinating geological dimension to the journey.

The Flaming Cliffs are world‑famous and a dream destination for fossil enthusiasts. They were named by American adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews, who discovered the first dinosaur fossils here in 1920. The striking red sandstone cliffs glow brilliantly at sunset, living up to their dramatic name.

The Bayanzag area is ideal for hiking and fossil hunting, with time to explore the surrounding terrain and enjoy the unique desert scenery. You will stay overnight in a family‑run ger camp

Day 7 - Erdenedalai Town (350km)

This area is a small mountainous region located along the Ongi River. A bend in the river marks the remains of two ruined monasteries, together known as Ongiin Khiid (Ongi Monastery). Once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia, Ongi Monastery was founded in 1660 and originally consisted of two major temple complexes situated on the north and south banks of the Ongi Gol River.

The older southern complex included various administrative buildings and 11 temples, while the northern complex, constructed in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples, including one of the largest temples in Mongolia at the time. Although much of the monastery was destroyed in the 1930s, the atmospheric ruins and surrounding landscape offer a fascinating glimpse into Mongolia’s religious history.

Overnight accommodation is at a local family‑run ger camp, with a shower available for guests

Day 8 - Ulaanbaatar (250km)

Return to Ulaanbaatar with nothing but fond memories and the Gobi sand in your wake you will return to UB, aiming to be back in town by 6pm, enjoying a last picnic lunch in the wild at Zorgol Khairkhan Mountain. the mountain is venerated and revered by the locals, who believe it is the home of a great benevolent spirit.

Enjoy rest of your journey!

I had an incredible two months traveling in Mongolia, all thanks to Meg and her team. I’m used to traveling by myself and was very reluctant to use a guide or go on arranged tours but decided to because of my unfamiliarity with the country and language. Meg organized trips around what I wanted to do and see. It was like traveling with a very organized, well connected friend. Her passion and knowledge for her country and it’s history is inspiring and contagious. She’s very conscious of the negatives and positives of tourism in Mongolia and works very hard to make her tours benefit both locals and travellers. Her philanthropic efforts are numerous, she has the biggest heart! I felt like every dollar I spent was going to a worthy cause. I had only originally planned to do two trips but ended up doing five because they were such great experiences! I really can’t say enough good things about Meg and her company. Having travelled to Mongolia with no real expectations, I feel like I’ve come away with a friend for life in Meg and completely in love with a country of endless sky.
