Accommodation:

While exploring the countryside of Mongolia, we prefer to stay with local nomadic family ger camps. Gers are traditional Mongolian felt tents and are usually shared by 3–5 people from your group only. You will not share the ger with other travelers, hosts, guides, or drivers.

As a Mongolian company, we aim to support local families and their livelihoods, while giving travelers the chance to experience the authentic culture and daily life of herders on the steppe.

Some camps have basic Western-style facilities, so there will be a few nights with showers available during this tour. However, please note that travel in rural Mongolia can be remote and sometimes bumpy, as many roads are unpaved and Western-style comforts may not always be available.

For those who prefer more comfort, tourist ger camps with hot showers and Western-style facilities are available in some areas. These upgraded accommodations are not included in the current price, but we can adjust the itinerary and quotation if preferred.

Itinerary:

Day 1. Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazriin Chuluu (230km)

The tour begins at 7:00 am with a drive to our first destination in Middle Gobi Province. Baga Gazriin Chuluu is a striking range of granite hills rising from the surrounding desert landscape. It is believed that Chinggis Khaan once grazed his horses here, and the area remains deeply respected by local people.

These granite hills offer excellent opportunities for scrambling and hiking, with scenic viewpoints and unique rock formations to explore. On the way to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, we stop for lunch at a local restaurant.

The mountain is venerated and revered by the locals, who believe it is the home of a great and benevolent spirit. On the first night, we stay at a nomadic family’s ger camp, where the family has built a simple shower facility.

Day 2. Tsagaan Suvarga (240km)

Today’s drive will be along a paved road. After an early breakfast, we set off toward Tsagaan Suvarga, a striking natural formation approximately 30 meters high and 100 meters long, shaped over thousands of years by wind and water erosion. From a distance, it can easily be mistaken for the ruins of an ancient city, creating a dramatic and surreal landscape.

Lunch will be enjoyed in Mandalgovi, the capital of Dundgovi Province, at a local restaurant. In the evening, we continue to our accommodation and stay overnight at a nomadic family’s ger camp. The family has also built a shower facility for guests.

Day 3. Yoliin Am Valley (180km)

Today we enter the South Gobi Desert in Ömnögovi Province. After breakfast, we begin our drive toward Dalanzadgad, the provincial capital, where the tour guide will restock supplies with fresh food. Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we continue to Yoliin Am (meaning “Vulture’s Mouth”), a deep and narrow gorge located within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in southern Mongolia. Yoliin Am is famous for its permanent ice field, which can reach several meters in thickness by the end of winter and stretch for several kilometers. In some years, the ice remains frozen throughout the summer, creating a striking contrast to the surrounding desert landscape.

Overnight accommodation is at a nomadic family’s ger camp located in the valley, offering an authentic experience in this unique natural setting.

Day 4. Khongoryn Els (220km)

Driving on this day can be adventurous, as much of the route is unpaved. After breakfast, we begin our journey at 8:00 am, traveling through the dramatic landscapes of the South Gobi.

We enjoy a picnic lunch in a beautiful canyon before continuing on to the final destination of the day, Khongoryn Els. These spectacular sand dunes are the largest accumulation of sand within Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park. The towering dunes are bordered by lush green vegetation nourished by the Khongoryn Gol River, which is fed by underground water sources from the surrounding mountains, creating a striking contrast between desert and greenery. Overnight accommodation is at a local family‑run ger camp, which includes a shower facility, offering comfort alongside an authentic nomadic experience.

Day 5. Khongoryn Els

Take the opportunity to relax and fully appreciate the surrounding landscape. You will spend the day enjoying a variety of activities, including one hour of camel riding, hiking on the sand dunes, sand sliding, or spending time with a local nomadic family to learn about their traditional way of life.

There will also be an opportunity to enjoy a cold drink at the small bar/restaurant run by the local family. Please note that drinks and alcoholic beverages are not included in the tour price.

Day 6. Bayanzag (150km)

Today’s destination is the aptly named Flaming Cliffs. The adventure across the vast desert landscape continues, this time over what was once a prehistoric seabed. The Flaming Cliffs are a dream destination for fossil enthusiasts and are internationally famous as the site where the first dinosaur fossils were discovered in 1920 by American adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews, who gave the cliffs their name.

Lunch will be at a local café in Bulgan soum. The surrounding Bayanzag area is ideal for hiking, with striking red sandstone formations and open desert scenery. Overnight accommodation is at a family‑run ger camp.

Day 7. Ongiin Khiid Monastery (150km)

This area is a small mountainous region located along the Ongi River. A bend in the river marks the remains of two ruined monasteries, together known as Ongiin Khiid (Ongi Monastery). Once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia, Ongi Monastery was founded in 1660 and originally consisted of two major temple complexes situated on the north and south banks of the Ongi Gol River.

The older southern complex included various administrative buildings and 11 temples, while the northern complex, constructed in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples, including one of the largest temples in Mongolia at the time. Although much of the monastery was destroyed in the 1930s, the atmospheric ruins and surrounding landscape offer a fascinating glimpse into Mongolia’s religious history.

Overnight accommodation is at a local family‑run ger camp, with a shower available for guests

Day 8. Ulaantsutgalan Waterfalls (200km)

Be ready for a refreshing swim in the waterfalls. ‘Red Flows’ is the English translation for this river. The area was formed by volcanic activity that dates back 20,000 years. This location is amazing for trekking, fishing, relaxing, and indulging your inner photographer if the weather is right for the day. Accommodation will be in a family run ger camp.

Day 9. Khar Khorin- Tuvhun Monastery (130km)

After breakfast, we drive to Tuvkhun Monastery. Upon arriving at the base of the mountain, we begin a 2‑kilometre uphill hike to the monastery, followed by a 2‑kilometre trek back down. For those who prefer not to hike, there is an option to hire a local horse. Horse riding takes approximately two hours up and two hours back and is available for an additional cost, payable directly to the local herders. After returning to the vehicle, we enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the peaceful natural setting.

In the afternoon, we continue to Khar Khorin, a historic town that was once the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, founded by Chinggis Khan in the 13th century. Here, we visit the magnificent Erdene Zuu Monastery, the Khar Khorin Museum, and several important stone monuments around the town.

After a full day of exploration and immersion in Mongolia’s rich history, we enjoy dinner at a local family‑run ger camp, where shower and western toilet facilities are available. The evening concludes with a traditional cultural performance by local artists, providing a memorable end to the day.

Day 10. Tsenher Hot Springs (125km)

We begin driving toward Arkhangai Province, where the day is dedicated to relaxation at the hot springs. The complex features a combination of outdoor and indoor pools, with separate bathing areas for men and women. Please note that during the rainy season, access to the hot springs may not be possible if the river is flooded. In this case, the itinerary will be adjusted, and time will be spent relaxing in the surrounding mountains or visiting Tsetserleg town instead. Entrance to the hot springs is included in the tour price; however, additional services, such as specific pools and spa treatments, are available at an extra cost.

Day 11. Great White lake
