Tour Overview:

Central Mongolia is distinguished by its lush greenery, pristine freshwater lakes, impressive waterfalls, and a host of culturally significant sites. The Orkhon River basin stands out as a region of great historic importance, having played a key role in the development of Central Asia’s nomadic culture. Since prehistoric times, the area has witnessed ongoing interactions between people and their natural and social environments.

This landscape is dotted with a variety of historic landmarks and ruins, including monuments, monasteries, and temples. Many of these sites are considered to hold universal value, offering insight into the enduring presence and influence of human societies in Central Asia. The Orkhon Valley itself serves as a testament to this continuous human occupation.

Participants on this tour will have the opportunity to observe local wildlife, such as the Takhi horses, camels, and hawks. The itinerary features stops at several notable locations, including the Tsenher Hot Springs, Khar Khorin—the former capital of Mongolia—and the ‘mini-Gobi,’ where visitors can enjoy camel riding. Lake Terkhiin  Tsagaan, a remarkable body of water that spans 16 kilometers in width, 20 kilometers in length, reaches a depth of 20 meters, and covers a total area of 61 square kilometers. The lake’s freshwater environment supports a diverse array of fish and bird species.

A major highlight of the trip is the extraordinary opportunity to attend the local Naadam Festival in Hatgal. This vibrant event showcases Mongolia’s rich cultural heritage and offers an authentic glimpse into the traditions of the northern Mongolian communities.

Accommodation:

Once you are in the countryside exploring Mongolia it is our preference to stay with local nomadic family run ger camps. Gers will be shared by 4-5 travellers when we stay with a local family ger camps (only your group of travellers). As a Mongolian company we prefer to support these families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture and way of life on the steppe. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand. 

Please consider that travelling in the countryside of Mongolia can be quite remote. There are often no paved roads so driving can be bumpy and can take a little longer than you might be used to. Also, given the remoteness, western style comforts may not be available. 

Western style and luxury options are available in some parts of Mongolia in the form of Tourist ger camps. Ger camps have comfortable beds, hot showers and western style amenities. These are not included in the price quoted in this itinerary. However, if you think that you would prefer to have access to these western style comforts then please let us know and we can adjust the quote for your itinerary.

Tour departure times can be flexible, however due to heavy traffic 7 am on the morning of departure is recommended. The driver and guide can pick you up from the airport, train station, or your accommodation to suit your requirements.

Meals during the tour:

Most of the meals on this tour are included in the tour price including breakfast in the hotel in Ulaanbaatar. All included meals will be prepared from fresh local produce. The majority of the shopping for food will be done before the trip departs, and fresh goods, such as meats, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, will be bought en-route during the trip from supermarkets, local shops and markets. Breakfasts will generally consist of breads and cereals, if time allows a warm breakfast may be prepared. Many lunches will be provided en-route and will be light meals such as sandwiches and/or salads or local restaurants. All evening meals will be freshly-prepared hot meals, and will consist of a variety of continental and local dishes. Our GUIDE will organize the meal preparation and lead the way here. Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements can be catered for but need to be specified prior to arrival.

Some recommendations:

Summer months in Mongolia are from early June to mid-September. Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 16-20 degrees centigrade between day and night. So be prepared for all weather conditions.

What to bring:

Sleeping bag (we can provide clean sleeping bags if you prefer), sunscreen, long and short underwear for travel in the high mountains, comfortable footwear, lip balm, sanitary hand wipes, sunglasses, prescription medications (if needed), rain gear, flashlight and sleeping bag liner.

Itinerary:

July 3. Ulaanbaatar to Khustai National Park & Khogno Khaan Natural Reserve

The tour begins at 7:00 AM with a drive out of Ulaanbaatar. The first destination is Hustai National Park, renowned for being home to the reintroduced Przewalski or “Takhi” horse, which is one of the last truly wild horse species in the world. Upon arrival at the park, you will have the opportunity to observe these remarkable animals in their natural habitat.

After lunch, the journey continues to Khogno Khan Nature Reserve. Here, you will stay in a local family ger camp, in one of their traditional gers. The Khogno Khan Natural Reserve features a striking landscape of rocky hills rising above flat plains and sand dunes. During your stay, you will have the chance to explore the ruins of the Uvgun Khiid Monastery, which was destroyed in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. With some luck, you may even spot a snow leopard in the area. The day also includes a camel riding experience to further immerse yourself in the local culture and landscape. No shower available

July 4. Khar Khorin – The Ancient Capital City

After enjoying breakfast at 9:00 AM, the journey continues with a drive of approximately 90 kilometers to Khar Khorin, the ancient capital established by Chinggis Khan in the 13th century. Upon arrival in this historic town, the first stop is the renowned Erdene Zuu Monastery. Here, visitors will have the opportunity to observe chanting monks and experience the unique traditions of Mongolian Buddhist culture.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant, offering a taste of regional cuisine. The afternoon includes a visit to the Khar Khorin Museum, where you can learn more about the city’s rich history and cultural significance. Additionally, there will be time to explore some of the rock monuments scattered throughout the town, offering further insight into the area’s heritage.

After a full day of exploration, dinner will be enjoyed at a local family restaurant. Accommodation for the night is at a family guesthouse, where shower facilities are available for your comfort.

July 5-6 Ulaantsutgalan Waterfalls

Over the course of two days, you will have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing waters of Ulaantsutgalan Waterfalls. The name ‘Red Flows’ is the English translation for this river, which was shaped by volcanic activity approximately 20,000 years ago. This stunning location is ideal for a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and relaxing. Weather permitting, it is also a perfect place to indulge in photography and capture breathtaking surroundings.

During your stay, you can hike down to the base of the waterfall, allowing for a unique vantage point and appreciation of the area’s rocky terrain. To further immerse yourself in classic Mongolian culture, explore the surrounding steppes on horseback.

Accommodation will be provided in a family-run ger camp, offering an authentic local experience. Please note that shower facilities are not available at this camp.

After spending two days at the waterfalls, your journey will continue towards Tsenher Hot Springs.

July 7 Tsenher Hot Springs

On the fifth day, your journey begins at 9:00 AM with a drive toward Arkhangai province, where you will have the opportunity to unwind and rejuvenate at the renowned Tsenher Hot Springs. The springs feature both outdoor and indoor bathing pools, providing a relaxing experience for all visitors. 

It is important to be aware that during the rainy season, access to the hot springs may be limited if the river becomes flooded. In such cases, alternative arrangements will be made, and you may spend time in the guesthouse in Tsetserleg town. The entrance fee to the hot springs is included in your itinerary, but any additional services—such as specialized pools or spa treatments—are available at an extra cost.

July 8 Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur - Great White Lake

The day begins with a scenic drive to Tsetserleg town. Here, your guide will purchase fresh food supplies to ensure you are well-prepared for the days ahead. While in Tsetserleg, you will have the opportunity to visit the Arkhangai Museum, gaining insight into the region’s rich history and culture. Lunch will be enjoyed at the local café.

After lunch, the journey continues towards Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, a striking volcanic lake encircled by rugged, rocky mountains. The route includes stops at the Chuluut River and the Khorgo Volcano, both offering unique natural highlights and opportunities for exploration. Once at Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, you will spend 1 night at a family-run ger camp, allowing you to experience the local way of life. The area is renowned for its natural beauty, and you will have the chance to go hiking in the volcanic mountains, where you can take in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

July 9. Murun city

After enjoying an early morning breakfast, you will set out on a drive toward Khuvsgul province. Upon arrival, accommodation will be arranged at a family-run guesthouse, offering a comfortable and authentic local experience. Murun, the capital of Khuvsgul Province, is a bustling city that serves as an important administrative and cultural center for the region. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to experience everyday life in this provincial capital and prepare for the next stage of your journey.

July 10. Journey to Khuvsgul Lake

Begin your day by heading north toward the renowned Lake Khuvsgul, often celebrated as the “Dark Blue Pearl” of Mongolia. The drive is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, gradually revealing the striking blue waters of the lake as you approach.

Lake Khuvsgul is an impressive natural wonder, stretching 136 kilometers in length and 36 kilometers in width, with a depth of 262 meters. It is situated at an altitude of 1,645 meters above sea level and is fed by 96 rivers and streams, including the Egiin River. The Egiin River continues its journey, eventually merging with the Selenge River, which flows onward to Lake Baikal.

The area around Lake Khuvsgul is home to diverse taiga flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature lovers. The lake is also a vital stopover on the migratory route for numerous bird species from Siberia, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching enthusiasts.

During your stay, you will enjoy a boat ride, granting you a different perspective of the lake’s vast expanse and stunning surroundings. Accommodation will be arranged at a local ger camp by the lake shoreline. Western style amenities are available.

July 11-12 Khatgal Naadam Festival

Short drive to Khatgal village for a full day immersed in the Mongolian Naadam festival. Naadam is a cornerstone of Mongolian culture, renowned for its vibrant games, lively parades, and joyful celebrations. The festival’s main attractions are the ‘three manly games’—wrestling, archery, and horse racing—each deeply rooted in Mongolian tradition and history.

The festivities commence with a grand opening ceremony, where dancers and musicians captivate the audience, and athletes and horse riders make a ceremonial procession across the Khatgal Naadam arena. Following the spectacle of the opening, the competitions begin, offering a memorable and truly unmissable experience of Mongolian culture and spirit.

For the next 2 days experience the local Naadam Festival and spend time at Lake Khuvsgul immersing yourself in the breathtaking natural beauty and tranquility of the area. Begin each day with a hearty breakfast to prepare for the adventures ahead.

There is a horse riding opportunity into the nearby mountain range, allowing you to further appreciate the region’s diverse terrain and panoramic vistas. For those who prefer a more restful afternoon, you are welcome to stay behind and relax in the peaceful and serene environment of the lake’s surroundings. Western style amenities are available. 

July 13 Selenge River

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you will set out at 8:00 AM for a long drive toward the Selenge River. 

Your destination for the day is a family-run ger camp located on the banks of the Selenge River, one of the most lush and scenic regions in Mongolia. The Selenge River is a significant waterway, stretching 992 kilometers and ultimately flowing into Lake Baikal. No shower available.

July 14: Journey to Amarbayasgalant Monastery

Begin your day with an early breakfast before setting out at 8:00 AM for the next destination. The journey takes you through the town of Erdenet, Mongolia’s third largest city, where you will pause for a lunch break and have a brief opportunity to experience the local atmosphere.

After lunch, continue your drive to Amarbayasgalant Monastery, one of the three largest Buddhist monastic centers in Mongolia. The monastery was established by the order of the Manchu emperor Enkh-Amgalan Khan and was intended to serve as the final resting place for Zanabazar. Today, 28 temples remain within the monastery complex, offering a glimpse into Mongolia’s rich spiritual history.

The monastery is set against the backdrop of a stunning mountain range just north of Amarbayasgalant, making it a perennial favorite among travelers for both its cultural significance and its breathtaking scenery. At the end of the day, you will stay overnight in a local family ger camp. No shower available.

July 15 Return to Ulaanbaatar.

After breakfast, begin your journey back to Ulaanbaatar. You will travel approximately 420 kilometers, enjoying the vast Mongolian landscape one final time as you make your way south. Along the route, stop to savor a traditional Mongolian lunch, taking in the last moments of your adventure in the wild.

Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, your driver and guide will take you to your accommodation, concluding your journey with fond memories of the experiences and landscapes that have defined your trip.
