Departing from Ulaanbaatar, the adventure heads south through the Middle and Southern Gobi, offering a true sense of the desert’s immense scale and beauty. Along the way, you will experience life on the steppe with unforgettable activities such as riding two‑humped Bactrian camels, visiting a nomadic family, and enjoying the desert’s spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

Highlights include the ancient capital of Khar Khorin and the historic Erdene Zuu Monastery.

The tour concludes in the Orkhon River Valley, the cradle of Central Asia’s nomadic civilisation. Recognised for its outstanding universal value, this cultural landscape bears exceptional testimony to human history in the region. Scattered throughout the valley are ancient monuments, monasteries, temples, and archaeological ruins that reflect centuries of harmonious interaction between nomadic culture and the natural environment.

Accommodation:

Once you are in the countryside exploring Mongolia it is our preference to stay with local nomadic family Ger camps. Gers will be shared by 3-5 people (only your group) when we stay with a local family ger camps. As a Mongolian company we prefer to support these families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture and way of life on the steppe. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand. Some families expanded their ger camp and built Western style amenities. On this tour you will have some nights of shower.

Ger camps have comfortable beds, hot showers and western style amenities. These are not included in the price quoted in this itinerary. However, if you think that you would prefer to have access to these western style comforts then please let us know and we can adjust the quote for your itinerary.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazriin Chuluu (230km)

The tour begins at 7:00am with a drive south from Ulaanbaatar to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, located in the Middle Gobi Province.

Baga Gazriin Chuluu is a dramatic landscape of granite rock formations rising from the surrounding desert steppe. Rich in history and legend, it is believed that Chinggis Khaan once grazed his horses in this area. The rocky hills provide excellent opportunities for short hikes and light scrambling, allowing you to explore hidden valleys, unique rock formations, and scenic viewpoints.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive at a nomadic family ger camp, where you will spend the night. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience traditional Mongolian hospitality and gain insight into the nomadic way of life.

Accommodation: Nomadic family ger camp (shower available)

Day 2 - Tsagaan Suvarga (240km)

Today’s journey follows a paved road as you travel deeper into the Gobi region. After packing up the camp, you will drive to Tsagaan Suvraga, one of Mongolia’s most striking natural landmarks.

Tsagaan Suvraga is a dramatic limestone formation approximately 30 metres high and 100 metres long, sculpted by wind and water erosion over thousands of years. Its unusual shapes and layered colours often resemble the ruins of an ancient city when viewed from a distance. There will be time to explore the area on foot and enjoy the impressive views across the surrounding desert plains.

Lunch will be in Mandalgovi town, the capital of the Middle Gobi Province. In the afternoon, you will continue to your nomadic family ger camp, where you will stay overnight. A shower is available.

Day 3 - Yoliin Am Valley (180km)

Today we enter the South Gobi Desert in Umnugovi Province. After breakfast, we begin the drive to Dalanzadgad, the provincial capital, where your guide will restock supplies with fresh food.

Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant in Dalanzadgad before continuing to Yoliin Am Valley (meaning “Vulture’s Mouth”), located within Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park in southern Mongolia.

Yoliin Am is a deep and narrow gorge, renowned for its impressive permanent ice field. By the end of winter, the ice can reach several metres in thickness and stretch for several kilometres. In some years, parts of the ice remain frozen throughout the summer, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding desert landscape.

After exploring the valley, you will travel to your nomadic family ger camp for the night.

Day 4 - Khongoryn Els (220km)

Driving on this day can be adventurous, as much of the route follows unpaved desert roads. After breakfast, we begin the journey to Khongoryn Els, the largest and most impressive sand dune system in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park.

Khongoryn Els is a spectacular expanse of towering sand dunes, bordered by lush green vegetation sustained by the Khongoryn Gol River, which is fed by underground springs from the surrounding mountains. The striking contrast between golden sand dunes and vibrant greenery makes this area one of the most memorable landscapes in the Gobi Desert.

You will stay overnight in a family‑run ger camp, a shower is available, and the family also operates a small restaurant, where cold drinks can be purchased.

Day 5 - Khongoryn Els

Take the opportunity to relax and fully appreciate the surrounding landscape. You will enjoy approximately one hour of camel riding to the sand dunes, followed by time for hiking, sand sliding, or climbing to the top of the dunes. Reaching the summit of the sand dunes before sunset is a truly memorable experience, as the changing colours of the desert create a spectacular and peaceful sunset over the Gobi.

Day 6 - Bayanzag (150km)

Your destination today is the aptly named Flaming Cliffs, also known as Bayanzag. The adventure across the vast desert landscape continues as you travel over what was once a prehistoric seabed, adding a fascinating geological dimension to the journey.

The Flaming Cliffs are world‑famous and a dream destination for fossil enthusiasts. They were named by American adventurer Roy Chapman Andrews, who discovered the first dinosaur fossils here in 1920. The striking red sandstone cliffs glow brilliantly at sunset, living up to their dramatic name.

The Bayanzag area is ideal for hiking and fossil hunting, with time to explore the surrounding terrain and enjoy the unique desert scenery. You will stay overnight in a family‑run ger camp

Day 7 - Ongiin Khiid Monastery (150km)

This area is a small mountainous region located along the Ongi River. A bend in the river marks the remains of two ruined monasteries, together known as Ongiin Khiid (Ongi Monastery). Once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia, Ongi Monastery was founded in 1660 and originally consisted of two major temple complexes situated on the north and south banks of the Ongi Gol River.

The older southern complex included various administrative buildings and 11 temples, while the northern complex, constructed in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples, including one of the largest temples in Mongolia at the time. Although much of the monastery was destroyed in the 1930s, the atmospheric ruins and surrounding landscape offer a fascinating glimpse into Mongolia’s religious history.

Overnight accommodation is at a local family‑run ger camp, with a shower available for guests

Day 8 - Ulaantsutgalan Waterfalls (300km)

Be prepared for a refreshing swim at the waterfalls. The river here is known locally as “Red Flows”, reflecting the rich volcanic history of the area. The surrounding landscape was shaped by volcanic activity approximately 20,000 years ago, creating dramatic formations and fertile valleys.

This area is ideal for trekking, fishing, relaxing, and for photography lovers, it offers outstanding opportunities—especially when weather conditions are favourable. Surrounded by natural beauty and open space, it is a perfect place to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Overnight accommodation will be in a family‑run ger camp, offering a comfortable and authentic nomadic experience.

Day 9 - Khar Khorin- Tuvhun Monastery (130km)

After breakfast, we drive to Tuvkhun Monastery. Upon arriving at the base of the mountain, we begin a 2 kilometre uphill hike to the monastery, followed by a 2 kilometre trek back down. For those who prefer not to hike, there is an option to hire a local horse. Horse riding takes approximately two hours up and two hours back and is available for an additional cost, payable directly to the local herders. After returning to the vehicle, we enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the peaceful natural setting.
In the afternoon, we continue to Khar Khorin, a historic town that was once the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, founded by Chinggis Khan in the 13th century. Here, we visit the magnificent Erdene Zuu Monastery, the Khar Khorin Museum, and several important stone monuments around the town.
After a full day of exploration and immersion in Mongolia’s rich history, we enjoy dinner at a local family run ger camp, where shower and western toilet facilities are available. The evening concludes with a traditional cultural performance by local artists, providing a memorable end to the day.

Day 10 - Ulaanbaatar (380km)

Today you return to Ulaanbaatar, bringing your journey to a close with nothing but fond memories of Mongolia’s vast landscapes and nomadic culture. Enjoy a lunch along the way and take in your last moments in the wild before reaching the city.

Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, your driver will transfer you to your accommodation.
We wish you a wonderful continuation of your travels.

Mongolian Family Adventure
Our family of four (kids 12 and 14) did Meg’s 10 day tour of the Gobi and Central Mongolia. We had an amazing adventure. The landscapes were out of this world and we stayed in some stunning, secluded spots. We loved staying in the more “off-the-beaten-path” locales and just soaking up the grand nature and beautiful culture around us. The itinerary of the tour was well set up, but what really made the trip was our amazing guide Luna and our driver Eba. They treated us like their own family and we could not have asked for a better duo to guide us! Luna’s warmth, conversation, connection and cooking really made the trip for us. I would definitely recommend this tour, and especially the amazing duo Luna and Eba!

Meg, Bujinn and Oogi too really went above and beyond to help us with a medical issue. Would highly recommend.

Great stay and great journey!!
My friend and I strolled into Meg’s to look into a 9 day journey around the Gobi and Central Mongolia and were greeted by Bunny who was super friendly and gave us some traditional Mongolian snacks while showing us our options. We needed to leave the next day and they arranged everything including a three day Naadam package at the end. The next morning we met Meg who sat down to get to know us and share her story with us. My luggage was lost and Bunny sorted it out for me with several calls to the airport. While we waited for word of the luggage, Meg took us to a cool coffee shop. Angie, our driver and Dari took us for my luggage at the airport and we were able to secure the luggage. For the next nine days Augie and Dari took care of us- making sure we were comfortable and well fed as well as entertaining us with stories. I highly recommend Meg’s tour company- it’s like traveling with family- the family you actually like and want to spend time with!
