Packing List

Mongolia is a country of extreme weather conditions. Depending on the time of year you go you should pack accordingly. For summer, it is rather hot, the evenings can get cool especially in the Gobi and mountains. Summer months in Mongolia are from early June to mid September. Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 14-20 degrees centigrade between day and night. So be prepared for all weather conditions.

We would recommend traveling as light as possible and using a good backpack. But you can buy everything you need in Mongolia’s department stores and travel shops. The following is a rough guide of things that you will need to pack for your trip to Mongolia. Although this may not suit everyone’s needs, it can be adapted to personal requirements or the type of trip that you are planning to take.

Gifts for Nomads

It is a good idea to include small gifts in your packing list, as you will inevitably be visiting local nomadic families in the county. It is polite to offer them some small gifts to show your gratitude in return for their hospitality. Our suggestion is to shop locally in UB rather than worry about bringing anything specifically in your luggage. You will find everything you need in UB. Supporting local businesses bolsters the economy and creates local jobs. We also encourage you to be mindful of healthy options and the environment when choosing gifts.

Some suggested gifts include:
– Basket of fruit (Fruit is not abundant in Mongolia and is a luxury for a number of nomadic families)
– School supplies like notebooks, pencils etc
– Colouring books
– English and Mongolian picture books for children
– Essential everyday products like soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes etc are also appreciated.
Hope you find it useful!
