Tour Overview:

The city tour, from 8am until 6pm, includes Gandan Monastery, the National History Museum, Zaisan monument, where you will view the whole city. Ger district on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar lie the ger districts – a fascinating sprawl of informal gers and housing that stretch up into the hills around the city, as well as Sukhbaatar Square and the local ‘black market’ Narantuul.

Meet the guide at Meg’s Guesthouse in the city center, or at your preferred location at 8am.

Itinerary:

Ulaanbaatar City Tour

The city was founded in 1639 as an initially nomadic Buddhist monastic center. Since 1778 it has been located in the Tuul river valley. In the 20th century, Ulaanbaatar grew into a major manufacturing center.

Gandan Monastery
This is the main monastery in the city and one of the few monasteries in the country that escaped the communist purges during the 1930s.

– Sukhbaatar Square
This is a big open space in the center of the city with an equestrian statue of the 1921 hero Sükhbaatar, and a seated statue of Chinggis Khaan.

– National History Museum
The Mongolian National History Museum was first established in 1924 with the aim of introducing the history, culture, and natural environment of Mongolia to its visitors. From 1940 to 1941, the museum was known as the Museum of Local Research and then from 1956 to 1991 as the State Central Museum.

– Bogd Khaan Winter Palace
This palace, alaso known as The Green Palace, was built between 1893 and 1903 by Mongolian masters and dedicated to the YIII Bogd Gegeen, the head of Lamaist religion and the last Khan of Mongolia.

– Zaisan Memorial Statue
This is a huge communist-era monument located on a hill near the city. It represents the Russian and Mongolian heroes who fought together during WWI and WWII. Nowadays it is a popular viewpoint where you can watch over the entire city. There is also a huge Buddhist statue at the bottom.

– International intellectual museum

The museum’s collection includes many Mongolian puzzle toys, and world famous, rare and precious exhibits. The museum is a manufacturer of Mongolian puzzle toys, logic games, hand crafted products and souvenirs, and it exports most of its products abroad. The museum has exhibited over 80 international exhibitions and fairs in 50 countries.

– Gobi Cashmere Factory
Mongolia is famous for its cashmere production – visit the factory store of one the leading brands in Mongolia.

Your city tour finishes at around 6pm. We suggest you watch the National Music and Dance Ensemble which start at 6pm (tickets not included in the tour cost). The driver can take you to the show.
