8 Day Great Steppe

Tour Overview:

Central Mongolia is spectacular and lush greenery, swimming in freshwater lakes and waterfalls, as well as many famous cultural sites. Highlights include the ancient capital Khar Khorin, the Erdenezuu monastery, as well as visiting Khustai National Park to catch a glimpse of the Mongolian wild horses.

Khorgo Volcano, Lake Terkhiin Tsagaan which is 16 kilometers wide, 20 kilometers in length 20 meters in depth, and 61 square kilometers in this area. The Lake is extremely beautiful with fresh water and rich species of fish and birds.

As a Mongolian company we prefer to support Nomadic families financially, and help support their livelihood. We are sure this resonates with our travelers who enjoy engaging with their culture on The Desert. It is therefore our preference to stay with these families if they have an extra Ger. As well as directly supporting local herders, you can experience this rich traditional way of life first hand.

Departure Time & Place:

Tour departure times can be flexible, however, 8 am on the morning of departure is recommended. The driver and guide can pick you up from the airport, train station, or your accommodation to suit your requirements.

Meals during the tour:

Most of the meals on this tour are included in the tour price. All included meals will be prepared from fresh local produce. The majority of the shopping for food will be done before the trip departs, and fresh goods, such as meats, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, will be bought en-route during the trip from supermarkets, local shops and markets. Breakfasts will generally consist of breads and cereals, if time allows a warm breakfast may be prepared. Many lunches will be provided en-route and will be light meals such as sandwiches and/or salads or local restaurants. All evening meals will be freshly-prepared hot meals, and will consist of a variety of continental and local dishes. Our GUIDE will organize the meal preparation and lead the way here. Vegetarian meals and other dietary requirements can be catered for but need to be specified prior to arrival.

Some recommendations:

Summer months in Mongolia are from early June to mid September. Although the Mongolian summers are hot and dry with occasional rain, the temperature can fluctuate as much 14-20 degrees centigrade between day and night. So be prepared for all weather conditions.

What to bring:

Sleeping bag (we can provide sleeping bag, if your luggage is full), sleeping bag liner, sunscreen, a hat, long underwear, shorts, comfortable footwear, lip balm, sanitary hand wipes, sunglasses, prescription medications (if needed), rain gear, flashlight.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Hustai National Park - Khogno Khaan Natural Reserve

After an early 7am breakfast, the tour begins at 8am with the drive out of Ulaanbaatar. The first stop will be Hustai National Park. The park is home to the successfully reintroduced Przewalski or “Takhi” Horse. There are some of the last truly wild horses in the world. Picnic lunch in the Hustai mountain.

Your final destination for the day will be the wild rocky mountain, where you will stay in a local family ger and enjoy dinner. Khogno Khan Natural Reserve is a beautiful series of rocky hills that rise above the otherwise flat landscape and sand dunes. You can visit the ruins of the Uvgun Khiid monastery, which was destroyed in 1937 in the Stalin Purges, and even spot a snow leopard if you are lucky. Camel riding in the sunset will finish your day in the steppe in unique style.

Day 2 - Khar Khorin- The Ancient Capital City

After breakfast at 8am, your journey will continue towards Khar Khorin for about 90km. Khar Khorin is the ancient capital built by Chinggis Khan in the 13th century. Upon arrival in Khar Khorin, you will visit the impressive Erdene Zuu Monastery, where you see chanting monks and witness Mongolian Buddhist culture. Have lunch in a local restaurant.

Visit Khar Khorin museum, as well as some of the rock monuments in the town. After a big day exploring have a nice dinner at local family restaurant. Showers are available at the guesthouse.

Day 3 - Tsenher Hot Springs

This easy day starts at 9am. Start driving to Arkhangai province to relax in the hot springs. There is a mixture of outdoor and indoor pools, with men and women bathing separately. Warning: during rainy season access to the hot springs may not be possible if the river is flooded. Instead of the hot springs, you may just stay in the mountains or with a family camping near the river.

Entrance to the Hot Spring is included but additional service such as pools and spa are extra.

Day 4-5 - Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur - Great White Lake

The day starts with the drive to Tsetserleg town, where the guide will buy fresh food for the upcoming days. Visit Arkhangai Museum, and have lunch in the Fairfield Cafe run by the local community. Then continue to Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur where you will spend 2 nights, a volcanic lake ringed by stark Rocky Mountains. On the way we will take you to Chuluut River and the Khorgo Volcano.

There are many natural highlights to explore in this area. Horse riding into the volcanic mountains for amazing views. Have a relaxing day to yourself. Washing and laundry services might be available at one of the camps – please ask your guide for the details of extra services. Stay at a family ger camp.

Day 6 - Tsetserleg Town

Tsetserleg is the capital city of Arkhangai with population of 22000. The town fantastic hiking around the best Khalh ethnic museum in Mongolia and ancient cultural and commercial centre. Take the time to grab supplies at the local market have a warm shower in the Fairfield Guest house.

Day 7 - Ogii Lake

The day starts from 9am breakfast. Start driving to Ogii Lake. Picnic lunch on the road. Prepared by guide. Ogii Lake is a freshwater lake 1,387 meters above sea level and covers an area of 27 square km. The lake abounds in various types of fish and birds, which creates incredible natural beauty. Have a walk around do swimming. And boat hire available.

Charged hourly will cost extra, not included on this tour price. Dinner by the lake. Stay in the local family ger camp.

Day 8 - Ulaanbaatar

After last hearty breakfast the 9am. Start driving to Ulaanbaatar. On the way to capital city, we will visit Khar Bukhiin Balgas, a fortress that was inhabited by the Kitan Dynasty from 917 to 1120. Then return to Ulaanbaatar with nothing but fond memories, enjoying a picnic lunch on the way and one last day in the wild.
